Our Leadership Excellence
process prevents the leadership gap from occurring by
proactive planning for leadership growth before it is
needed.
For organizations approaching the third threshold barrier
to growth their main question is 'where
are we going to find more good people'?
When a sustainable organization has its foundation
dynamics in balance and its strategy in harmony with
its environment, it expands quickly. The leadership
span that holds and defines the organization is then
stretched. Like an expanding sphere, the surface area
the existing leaders must cover in an expanding organization
is many times more than the 2D radial growth. Things
expand so fast that the leadership of growth simply
becomes the management of change in a game of continuous
catch-up.
This is the unseen trap that causes many organizations
to fail when they are at their most powerful.

When this expansion is felt the desire
is for more leaders. In fact what the organization needs
is expanded leadership.
The sustainable growth approach to leadership
development instead recognizes that the qualities of
leadership are situational. Facilitative, consultative,
directive, emotive, expressive, authoritative, constructive,
exploitative, transformative, conservative, provocative,
reactive and integrative - are all valid leadership
styles from the integral frame. Each is desirable at
different stages of an organization's growth cycle.
The question to ask is not how many leaders, but rather
what mix of leadership for the future is required to
sustain our growth.
Not doing this has been identified as
the reason why many good leadership development programs
fail to add real value. Often they do not anticipate
that the leadership required is not more of the same,
or something different to the past, but the leadership
of a future organization that has not yet occurred.
When we move from the generics of leadership
to the specifics of the organization's future needs,
looking at the match with the changing operations, strategy
and culture as an integral whole, an internal capacity
for leadership development and growth can be consciously
created.
This is the basis on which our Leadership
Excellence programs are designed and why they
provide for sustainable growth.
