Sustainable
Excellence: Sustainable Industries - Leading Players
Stuart
Energy's expertise in renewable energy began almost
100 years ago with hydrolysis - making hydrogen from water. The
company itself was formed in 1948 with the farsighted vision of
being a leader in the future hydrogen economy. Using hydrogen
power completes a completely green energy cycle when combined
with other renewable energy sources - pure oxygen being the 'waste'
product. This future is almost here - as their joint venture partners
Ford and Toyota have realized. If the one barrier to fuel cell
powered cars is a re-fuelling infrastructure - earlier this year
Stuart Energy began opening the first 'hydrogen service stations',
which they have developed.
As
we begin this century with different questions, the organisations
that are building expertise in inherently sustainable industries
will be better positioned than those building expertise in the
industries in decline. This month's small company is one we hope
continues to succeed.

In Doubt: Do Something (Consciously)
We
all look for certainty. While we live in uncertain times with
uncertain futures we wish it were not so. However, living with
risk and uncertainty is something that has always been a fact
of life. What excites us is the ability to determine and predict
our future, and perhaps even have a role in its co-creation.

"Against
the Odds: The Remarkable Story of Risk" - Peter Bernstein
A
major reason for companies not succeeding is in their ability
to understand, manage and tolerate risk. Someone has finally grasped
the principles of risk in a macro-perspective. In this book Berstein
looks into history, covering the rise of probability theories,
stock market successes and stories of fate and fortune over the
last 450 years. He notes that understanding risk has taken us
from helplessness to choice. However, he concludes that, where
the raw material of any model is the data of the past, no amount
of supercomputing or non-linear calculation can tell you what
the future will be. The insight is that even when empowered with
data - "likeness to the truth is not the same as truth"
- and ultimately it is our thinking that guides us to recognize
the difference.
